Simple. First tell me what you need.
There is no charge for an estimate.
When you contact me, include as much detail about your commission project as you can. If you know what size illustration you want, that’s great!
Let me know if you want it done in color or black and white. If you are unsure, I’ll give you an estimate for both.
You can use this chart to get a ballpark idea of the cost of your commission. Please remember that the estimate is negotiable. There are always ways to alter the design of your piece to fit your budget.
Then, Keep in mind the time factor
Time is the greatest factor influencing price, so the larger and more complex a piece is, the longer it will take and the more expensive it will be. The same project done smaller, or the same size with less “stuff”, will take less time and will be less expensive. Please note that currently, there is a 9 - 12 month backlog on private commissions. Commissions are done when I am not working on art that will be published. Contracted work (card art, book covers, spot illustrations etc) is my "day job". So if you are willing to wait, drop me an email and we'll get you on the schedule!
Moving onto the sketch stage
Once the final price is agreed upon, I will draw up a simple one page Bill of Sale. The sketch is done and put up on a private page on my site, then I send you an e-mail with the URL for that page. I do this so that your e-mail program won’t get larded up with huge graphic files that take forever to download.
I’ll ask you to look the sketch over and let me know if it is what you had in mind. If it isn’t quite there or if something isn’t clear I’ll do another sketch. We’ll do this until you are satisfied with the design. If you’ve opted for a color image, the color studies are next.
Pay all at once or with installments
The sale information will be emailed to you. An installment schedule, if one is needed, will be spelled out there.
Monthly installments can be made for commissions over $300.00. Payment is due in full before the piece is shipped. Shipping is free for unframed art. A framing quote can be given after the piece is finished. It usually takes no more than a week to get the framing done. The framer I use is excellent, creative and reasonable.
You can pay with PayPal, personal check or Postal Money Order. Credit cards must go through PayPal. Overseas clients please pay by PayPal or International Postal Money Order. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with each piece.
Once the commission is in your hands or on your wall, please drop me an e-mail that I can use on my Testimonials page. A sentence or two would be great, or feel free to wax on. Word of mouth from a happy client is the best advertisement that I can possibly ask for.
